10 Activities You Would not Expect at an Airport


Passengers can be waiting at airports for hours, or in some cases, days, for their flights with very little to do except look around the duty free shops, or have a nap on one of the departure chairs.

Airports around the world are adding some exciting new features for a passengers to take advantage of during their wait; From rest and relaxation zones to ice skating rinks and cinemas.  Many of these facilities are free, though some are only accessible to certain passengers, depending on their destination.

Ice Skating

Located in the landside area at the Transportation Center, the ice rink is only available to transit passengers if they go through the immigration process.
The synthetic ice rink can hold up to 150 skaters at a time and is free to use but there is a small charge for skate hire.

The relaxing Balinese-themed swimming pool situated near the Transit Hotel at Departure Transit Lounge East, Level 3 is free for people staying at the Ambassador Transit Hotel.
Open from 7.00am to 11.00pm daily, non-residents can use the facilities for a small fee which includes use of the pool and jacuzzi, showers, towel and a complimentary non-alcoholic drink from the bar.

Found at the Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, Espace Musées displays works of art from some of the most famous artists of all time, with the current exhibition showcasing some of Rodin's well known work.
Open 365 days of the year it is located in Terminal 2E by gate M and admission is free.

Nature Walks

Nature Walk Butterfly Garden

Changi Airport have introduced the first butterfly garden at an airport, located in Terminal 3; Departure Transit Lounge, Level 2. Featuring a 6 metre grotto-waterfall and over 200 carnivorous and insectivorous plants, the individual enclosures allow you to witness the breeding and feeding of butterflies at close range.
They also have a beautiful Sunflower & Light Garden at Terminal 2, while Terminal 1 boasts an award winning Cactus Garden.

Watch a Film at the Cinema

Prague Airport is working with Attack Media to bring passengers a range of films to watch while waiting for their flights. While the main focus will be on Aviation topics, they will also be showing some more mainstream films.
Films from around the globe will be screened daily from 10:00am and entrance is free.

To pass the time at Prague Airport you can access their free wi-fi as well as play a game in their Xbox lounge, while Changi Airport in Singapore provides free mobile phone charging and rest beds as well as TV and News screens dotted around the terminals.

The golf course at HKIA is the 1st nine hole course in Hong Kong that meets United States Golf Association standards.
The signature hole, Island Green, was inspired by the world famous 17th hole at the Tournament Payers Club in Sawgrass, Florida. Situated on an island in the middle of an artificial lake, it is the only one of its kind in Hong Kong.
Located near Terminal 2, adjacent to AsiaWorld-Expo, it offers equipment rental and baggage storage as well as flood lighting for swing and putt at night.

Keeping children entertained when a flight is delayed is being made easier due to places like Haclav Havel Airport in Prague, who have introduced a large Children's play area and nursing / changing room as well as allowing parents to borrow buggies for free.
