Ryanair fees: cheaper to change your name

A Ryanair passenger recently realised it’s far cheaper to change your own name legally than paying the airline’s fees to fix a booking error on a flight ticket.

It’s pretty incredible that it’s cheaper to change your name by deed poll and get a new passport than dish out and pay Ryanair’s fees to change the name on a flight ticket! So one passenger did just that…

Adam West (born Armstrong) had a flight to Ibiza booked for him by his girlfriends stepdad but the name on the booking was wrong. Her stepdad used the surname Adam uses on Facebook (he’s a big fan of Batman), “West.” Noticing the mistake, he contacted Ryanair to fix the error but discovered it would cost him £220 to add his actual surname, Armstrong, to the ticket.

It’s free to change your name by deed poll in the UK, so Adam did just that. He changed his last name to West and ordered a new passport with the name change, which cost him £103.

Ryanair assures passengers it only costs £110 to change the name on a ticket per booking. Mr. West however thought he would have to pay twice, as his girlfriend was on the same booking.

Made a mistake on your flight booking?

A spokesperson from Ryanair says,

“Customers are asked to ensure that the details they enter at the time of booking are correct before completing their booking and we offer a 24 hour ‘grace period’ to correct minor booking errors.”

“A name change fee is charged in order to discourage and prevent unauthorised online travel agents from ‘screenscraping’ Ryanair’s cheapest fares and reselling them on to unwitting consumers at hugely inflated costs.”

Ryanair has been doing a lot to win over the hearts of more travellers. They recently reduced their airport check-in fee, and made it cheaper to travel with sporting equipment!
